When to replace the mattresses in your home

Summary:

Most people don’t think about the mattresses in their homes and when they may need replacing. It is only when an old or worn out mattress starts to disturb sleep, and possibly cause health problems, that we realise what needs to be done. Your mattress needs to be replaced, but how do you know the right time to do it?

Most people don’t think about the mattresses in their homes and when they may need replacing. It is only when an old or worn out mattress starts to disturb sleep, and possibly cause health problems, that we realise what needs to be done. Your mattress needs to be replaced, but how do you know the right time to do it?

As a general guideline, you should think about changing your mattress every five to seven years. Not every mattress will need replacing in this time, whilst some may wear out sooner. However, it is after the five-year mark that you should start to look out for the signs that your mattress is out of condition.

Your mattress’ condition is a big indicator as to whether it needs replacing or not. Try a few simple tests, such as sitting on the edge of your mattress to see if it supports your weight. If it collapses, it needs replacing. You should also look out for any dips in the mattress, as well as sagging in the middle.

You should also listen for creaking and shifting when you move around on the mattress, and feel or look for coils protruding from their normal place within the mattress.

Your comfort also affects when you need a new mattress. If you have trouble getting to sleep, are uncomfortable whilst in bed, or wake up feeling tired and less than rested, it may be time to replace your mattress. If you are suffering from aches, pains or a bad back, your mattress could be to blame.

On a final note, there is another reason why you may want to change your mattress. This is a change in lifestyle such as moving in with your partner, for example, for which you may need a larger king size mattress rather than a single or double mattress. Another big change is pregnancy, which requires a more supportive mattress or one such as a memory foam mattress which adjusts to shape.
